Etymology: < pine n.2 + nut n.1
Originally: a pine cone, esp. one containing edible seeds. In later use: the edible seed of any several pines, esp. the stone pine of Europe, Pinus pinea, and the Mexican stone pine, P. cembroides; also called pine kernel.
