Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin aculeolatus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin aculeolatus (1767 or earlier) < aculeolus little prickle (see below; < classical Latin acūleus aculeus n. + -olus -olus suffix) + -ātus -ate suffix2.Post-classical Latin aculeolus occurs as a reading (in 16th-cent. editions) at Martial 8. 71 (where modern editions read acu levius).
Botany.
Having small prickles or sharp points. Cf. aculeate adj. 3.
