Etymology: < German Phlogopit (A. Breithaupt Vollständiges Handb. der Mineralogie (1841) II. 398) < ancient Greek ϕλογωπός fiery-looking ( < ϕλογ- , ϕλόξ flame (see phlox n.) + ὠπ- , ὤψ face, eye: see -ops comb. form) + German -it -ite suffix¹.

Mineralogy.

A magnesium-rich mineral of the mica group that occurs as yellowish brown to brownish red prismatic crystals with a pearly lustre, chiefly in metamorphosed limestones and dolomites and in magnesium-rich igneous rocks.
