Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin thrombosis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin thrombosis (1560 or earlier) < Hellenistic Greek θρόμβωσις coagulation or curdling, blocked vein < ancient Greek θρομβοῦσθαι to contain clots, in Hellenistic Greek also to become curdled or clotted ( < θρόμβος thrombus n.) + -σις -sis suffix; compare -osis suffix.In sense 2 after German Thrombosis ( R. Virchow Gesammelte Abhandlungen (1856) iv. 623; now usually Thrombose). Compare the following example of the Greek word (transliterated) in English context in this sense:1687 Chirurgorum Comes iii. vii. xl. 616/1 When it is too narrow, besides, that it bleeds not as one would have it, a Tumor arises about the wound, which the Greeks call Thrombosis.
