Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin thrombus, thrombos.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin thrombus clot of blood (5th cent. as thrombos; from c1200 in British sources) < ancient Greek θρόμβος lump, clot of blood, curd of milk, probably < the same base as τρέϕεῖν to nourish (see tropho- comb. form).
Medicine.
1. A collection of clotted blood found in the skin or soft tissues, esp. at the site of phlebotomy or other injury to a blood vessel; a haematoma. Obsolete.
