Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French penetrail; Latin penetrāle, penetral.
Etymology: < Middle French penetrail (1550 in the passage translated in quot. 1589) and its etymon classical Latin penetrāle innermost part of something, innermost part of a temple (usually in plural penetrālia : see penetralia n.), in post-classical Latin also penetral (4th cent.), use as noun of neuter of penetrālis interior, innermost < penetrāre penetrate v. + -ālis -al suffix1.For the exchange of suffix in Middle French penetrail see the discussion at frontal n., poitrel n., portail n.; the form was perhaps reinforced in English by association with entrail n.1 N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pe·nĭtrăl) /ˈpɛnɪtrəl/.
