Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pentalpha.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pentalpha five-pointed star, pentagram (c1595 in a British source) < medieval Greek (or earlier) πένταλϕα < ancient Greek πεντα- penta- comb. form + ἄλϕα alpha n. and adj.; so named from its presenting the form of an A in five different positions. Compare French pentalpha (1625 or earlier), German Pentalpha (1696 or earlier). Compare earlier pentacle n., pentangle n., pentagonon n.
