Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French affabilité; Latin affābilitās.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French affabilité (c1270 in Old French; French affabilité ); and its etymon (ii) classical Latin affābilitās < affābilis affable adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Spanish afabilidad (a1456), Italian affabilità (13th cent. as †affabeletate).
The quality of being affable; readiness to converse with or be approached by others, formerly esp. when dealing with people of equal or lower status; geniality, friendliness. Also as a count noun: an indication or expression of this quality.
