Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French afeffer, enfeffer.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman afeffer, variant (see discussion at a- prefix1) of enfeffer, enfeoffer enfeoff v. Compare Old Occitan afevar to give (property or land) in fee (1494 or earlier).The first sense ‘to reward or punish as appropriate’ given in N.E.D. (1884) relied upon a transcription which has now been superseded:a1450 (?1419–20) Friar Daw's Reply (Digby) l. 133 in P. L. Heyworth Jack Upland (1968) 77 Þe seuen angels..Reve men of her rest & ferli hem afese.
