Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish parabién.
Etymology: < Spanish parabién (16th cent. in the phrase dar el parabién to congratulate, literally ‘to give the parabien’; compare the phrase para bien sea , literally ‘may it be for the good’ (1481–96)) < para for (1126–57; alteration after par (see per prep.) of earlier pora (1126) < por (10th cent.; see pro prep.) + a (see ad- prefix); compare post-classical Latin pro ad and per ad (10th cent. in Spanish sources)) + bien (1194–1211), use as noun of bien well (1109; < classical Latin bene : see benign adj.).
Obsolete.
A congratulatory compliment. Only in to give (a person) the parabien (of): to compliment or congratulate (on).
