Etymology: < scientific Latin Platygasteridae, family name (1925 or earlier; also in form Platygastridae ) < Platygaster , genus name (attributed to Latreille 1809; < platy- platy- comb. form + ancient Greek γαστήρ stomach: see -gaster comb. form) + -idae (see -id suffix³).
