Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: platy- comb. form, Greek κυρτός , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < platy- comb. form + ancient Greek κυρτός bulging (see kurtosis n.) + -ic suffix. Compare platykurtosis n.
Statistics.
Of a frequency distribution or its graphical representation: having less kurtosis than the normal distribution (i.e. having or indicating a greater spread of distribution either side of the median).

Pearson in Biometrika 4 173 Given two frequency distributions which have the same variability as measured by the standard deviation, they may be relatively more or less flat-topped than the normal curve. If more flat-topped I term them platykurtic, if less flat-topped leptokurtic, and if equally flat-topped mesokurtic.
