Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: platy- comb. form, Greek ἑλμινθ-, ἕλμινς.
Etymology: < platy- comb. form + ancient Greek ἑλμινθ-, ἕλμινς worm (see helminth n.), after scientific Latin Platyhelminthes, phylum name ( C. Claus Lehrbuch der Zoologie (1887)), earlier also as Platyelminthes (C. Gegenbaur 1859), Plathelminthes (A. Schneider 1873).The form Platyhelminthes is sometimes attributed to C. S. Minot (1876–7), though he uses Plathelminthes in publications of 1879–80. The phylum name was formerlyPlatyelmia (C. Vogt 1851).

A worm of the phylum Platyhelminthes, which comprises the flatworms (including planarians, flukes, and tapeworms), characterized by a simple flattened body which lacks blood vessels or coelomic cavities, and a digestive tract which, if present, has a single opening; a flatworm.
