Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: pan- comb. form, encephalitis n.
Etymology: < pan- comb. form + encephalitis n., after German Panencephalitis (H. Pette & G. Döring 1939, in Deutsche Zeitschr. f. Nervenheilkunde 149 32; now Panenzephalitis). Compare also German Panenzephalomyelitis (H. Pette 1938, in Münch. med. Wochenschr. 29 July 1138/2).
Medicine.
Inflammation of white and grey matter of the brain; diffuse or generalized encephalitis; an instance of this; spec. (in full subacute sclerosing panencephalitis) a chronic diffuse encephalitis causing progressive neurological deterioration and death, seen as a rare complication of measles virus infection, usually in children.
