Forms: 1800s– platycnemia, 1900s– platyknemia (rare).
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: platy- comb. form, Greek κνήμη , -ia suffix1.
Etymology: < platy- comb. form + ancient Greek κνήμη tibia (see cnemial adj.) + -ia suffix1, after French platycnémie (1876 in the passage translated in quot. 1878). Compare slightly earlier platycnemism n., platycnemic adj., and slightly later platycnemy n.
Physical Anthropology.
Flatness of the tibia; the condition of a tibia (often a fossil tibia) in which the anteroposterior diameter of the shaft is unusually small relative to the corresponding transverse diameter. Cf. platymeria n.
