Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Ostracoda.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Ostracoda (see ostracod n. and adj.).
Zoology.
With plural agreement. A large class of mostly minute aquatic crustaceans whose body is almost totally enclosed within a hinged, bivalved, and usually calcified carapace from which the antennae often protrude, and having no more than two appendages on the trunk.

1836 Penny Cycl. V. 341 The shell of the Ostracoda is formed of two pieces or valves representing those of a conchiferous mollusk or bivalve shell, but horny, not testaceous.
1893 T. R. R. Stebbing Hist. Crustacea xxvi. 397 Isopoda... Cyproniscidæ. They are parasitic on Ostracoda.
a1933 J. A. Thomson Biol. for Everyman (1934) I. xi. 185 Ostracoda. Small ‘water-fleas’ in fresh water and in the sea, the body with about eight segments completely enclosed in a bivalve shell.
1993 E. N. K. Clarkson Invertebr. Palaeontol. & Evol. (ed. 3) xi. 389/1 The Malacostraca..is the only class (other than the Ostracoda, usually treated as microfossils) with a good fossil record.
