Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: phyto- comb. form, Greek κοίνωσις.
Etymology: < phyto- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek κοίνωσις mingling, sharing ( < ancient Greek κοινοῦν to make common ( < κοινός common: see koine n.) + -σις -sis suffix). Compare Italian fitocenosi (1930). Compare earlier biocoenosis n.
Ecology.
A community of plants; all of the plant species found at a particular site, considered collectively.
