Amer. 11 Feb. 88/3 Phytocollite... This name has been given, says H. C. Lewis.., to a very curious jelly-like mineral recently found near the bottom of a peat bog at Scranton, Pa. 1883 H. C. Lewis in Proc. Amer. Philos. Soc. 1882–3 20 117 It is..suggested that all of these substances be combined under one generic name. The name ‘Phytocollite’..would include all jelly-like substances formed by the decomposition of plant matter. 1963 F. M. Swain in I. A. Breger Org. Geochem. 105 A dark brown to black gelatinous substance, dopplerite, occurs at depth in some bog and marsh deposits... It is believed to represent the result of ground water concentration of the black jellylike substance (phytocollite) formed in decomposing plant materials.
