Etymology: < phyto- comb. form + climate n.¹, apparently after use by Raunkiaer of a cognate term in either French or Danish (quot. 1937 apparently cites a French original, which has not however been traced). Compare Danish fanerofytklimaet , kryptofytklimaet (both C. Raunkiaer 1908, in Bot. Tidsskr. 29 54). Compare earlier phytoclimatic adj.
