单词 bemba
释义

Bembaadj.n.

Brit. /ˈbɛmbə/, U.S. /ˈbɛmbə/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, Bembas.
Forms: 1900s– Bemba, 1900s– Vemba, 1900s– Wemba Brit. /ˈwɛmbə/, U.S. /ˈwɛmbə/.
Origin: A borrowing from Bemba. Etymon: Bemba -bemba.
Etymology: < Bemba -bemba, self-designation. Compare earlier Babemba n.Compare Bemba mubemba , umubemba , with singular class prefix denoting a person, babemba , ababemba , with plural class prefix denoting people (compare Babemba n.), and cibemba , icibemba , with class prefix denoting a language. English uses. In early use in English, Babemba n. was more commonly used as the noun, and Bemba as the adjective (following D. Livingstone's practice; compare quot. 1872 at sense A. 1 and quot. 1867 at Babemba n.). Noun uses of Bemba became common in the mid 20th cent. and have now largely superseded Babemba n. Variant forms. With the variation of the initial consonant in English compare the discussion at Babemba n.; compare also Awemba n. Earlier use in place names. In the second half of the 19th cent., Bemba is also occasionally used as a place name in English, denoting the territory of the Bemba people (compare Bemba lubemba, ulubemba), and also (more commonly) in Lake Bemba (1866 or earlier), former name of Lake Bangweulu in Zambia, some of which is in Bemba territory. These both first appear in reports and discussions of D. Livingstone's expeditions of the 1860s; compare:1868 D. Livingstone Jrnl. 1 July in Last Jrnls. (1874) I. xii. 309 When asking for Lake Bemba, Kasongo's son said to me, ‘Bemba is not a lake, but a country’.
