Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. Serbo-Bulgarian Brit. /ˌsəːbəʊbʌlˈɡɛːrɪən/, /ˌsəːbəʊbʊlˈɡɛːrɪən/, U.S. /ˌsərboʊˌbəlˈɡɛriən/.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Serbian adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < Serv-, Serb- (in Serbian adj.) + -o- connective.Compare French †Servo-, Serbo-, formations in which are found from at least the first quarter of the 19th cent.
Combined with adjectives relating to the names of countries, in the sense ‘both Serbian and ——’, ‘between Serbia or Serbians and ——’, (esp. with reference to political or diplomatic relations between countries).
