Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ophicléide.
Etymology: < French ophicléide (1811) < ancient Greek ὄϕις serpent (see ophio- comb. form) + κλειδ- , κλείς key (see cleido-mastoid adj.).
Music.
1. A deep wind instrument consisting of a U-shaped brass tube with eleven keys, forming a bass version of the key-bugle. Also: a performer on this instrument.The ophicleide was developed in 18th cent. Europe where it supplanted the earlier serpent (see serpent n. 7).
