Etymology: < ancient Greek ϕυκο-, combining form (in e.g. ϕυκοϕάγος eating seaweed) of ϕῦκος seaweed ( > classical Latin fūcus : see fucus n.), of unknown origin: see -o- connective. Compare French phyco- (formations in which are found from the first half of the 19th cent., apparently earliest in phycologie phycology n.), German phyco-, phyko- (formations in which are found from the first half of the 19th cent.).Attested earliest in the first half of the 19th cent. in the post-classical Latin loan phycomater n., and subsequently in many adaptations of French and German words; compare e.g. phycology n., phycocyan n., phycoerythrin n. Formations within English are found from the second half of the 19th cent., apparently earliest in phycocyanogen n. .
