Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: French opisthoglyphe , -ous suffix; Latin Opisthoglypha , -ous suffix.
Etymology: Either < French opisthoglyphe opisthoglyph n. + -ous suffix, or < scientific Latin Opisthoglypha, former group name (see opisthoglyph n.) + -ous suffix. Compare slightly later opisthoglyph n., earlier opisthoglyph adj., and slightly earlier opisthoglyphic adj.
Zoology.
Of, relating to, or designating a colubrid snake having the rear one or two pairs of teeth in the upper jaw modified as fangs, with grooves to conduct the venom; back-fanged.
