Etymology: < classical Latin proboscid-, proboscis proboscis n. + -iferous comb. form. Compare scientific Latin proboscidiferus, specific name, French proboscidifère (both in Lamarck 1822).
Zoology. Now disused.
Having a proboscis; spec. relating to or designating gastropod molluscs characterized by a long, retractile snout (sometimes classified in a division Proboscidifera).
