Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Proboscidea.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Proboscidea, group name ( J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 96) < proboscidea , neuter plural of proboscideus (see proboscideous adj.).
Zoology.
With singular agreement: an order of large mammals that comprises the elephants and their extinct relatives, distinguished by the presence of a long, flexible trunk and (in most cases) by incisors developed into long tusks. With plural agreement: animals of this order collectively.
