Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin proboscid- , proboscis , -ean suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin proboscid-, proboscis proboscis n. + -ean suffix. In senses A. 1 and B. after scientific Latin Proboscidea (see Proboscidea n.). Compare French proboscidien (1817 as noun in Cuvier, 1842 as adjective).With forms in -ian compare -ian suffix.
