Etymology: < French baptise-r, -izer (11th cent.), < Latin baptīzāre, < Greek βαπτίζειν ‘to immerse, bathe, wash, drench,’ in Christian use appropriated to the religious rite, < βάπτειν to dip, plunge, bathe.
