Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: German Aulet; Greek αὐλητής.
Etymology: < (i) German Aulet (1833 in the passage translated in quot. 1847), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek αὐλητής piper < αὐλεῖν to play the aulos ( < αὐλός kind of wind instrument: see aulos n.) + -τής, suffix forming agent nouns. Compare French aulète (1812).
Chiefly Ancient Greek Music.
A player of the aulos.
