Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek αὐλός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek αὐλός oboe-type musical instrument, reed pipe, aulos < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin alvus belly (see alvine adj.). Compare post-classical Latin aulos (1513 or earlier), German Aulos (1835 or earlier). Compare the following earlier examples of the Greek word in English contexts:1753 W. Melmoth in tr. Cicero Lett. I. i. xii. 51 (note) He was surnamed Auletes, in allusion to his skill in playing upon a certain musical instrument called by the Greeks Aulos.1776 C. Burney Gen. Hist. Music I. vi. 508 The musical instruments of the ancients were of three kinds... Of the First kind the principal were the Flute,..and water Organ, under the several denominations of Αυλος, Tibia, [etc.] In plural form auloi after the Greek plural form.
Music.
A woodwind instrument of ancient Greece, or a similar instrument in use in some other ancient civilizations.The Greek instrument, formerly often erroneously believed to be a type of flute, is now known to have consisted of a cylindrical or conical tube made usually of wood or ivory, having a single or double reed, and played, usually as one of a pair blown simultaneously, by means of finger holes. In specialist use now generally denoting a pair of such instruments, typically fixed or bound together near the mouthpieces.
