Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek αὐλητικός.
Etymology: < ancient Greek αὐλητικός of or for the aulos, (of the soul) suited to playing the aulos, in Hellenistic Greek also (of reeds) used for making auloi < αὐλητής aulete n. + -ικός -ic suffix.Compare classical Latin aulēticos (Pliny), Middle French auletique (1566 in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny), both in the sense ‘used for making reed pipes’. Compare the following earlier examples of the Latin word in English contexts:1601 P. Holland tr. Pliny Hist. World I. xvi. xxxvi. 483 The Orchomenian Cane is hollow throughout from one end to the other, and this they call Auleticus [L. auleticon; Fr. Auletiques], or the pipe Cane; for as the former was fit for flutes, so is this better for great pipes.1601 P. Holland tr. Pliny Hist. World I. xvi. xxxvi. 483 A third sort also there is of Canes, which they called Auleticon [L. auleticon; Fr. Auletiques], for that it serveth to make flutes and pipes of.1633 T.
