Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian nužnik.
Etymology: < Russian nužnik latrine, toilet (1696 in Old Russian in plural form nužniki ) < nužnyj necessary + -nik , suffix forming nouns (compare -nik suffix). With the formation compare necessarium n.Brought to American English, particularly Alaskan English, by Russian immigrants.
U.S. regional (chiefly Alaska).
An outhouse containing a toilet, usually without plumbing.

1945 Alaska Sportsman Feb. 32 We..laid a graceful, curving path of shells to our ‘nooshnick’. By way of explanation, ‘nooshnick’ is the Russian name for the outhouses made necessary by the lack of a modern sewer system.
