Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Paradoxurus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Paradoxurus, genus name (Cuvier 1821, in Martre des palmiers 5 in E. G. St-Hilaire & F. G. Cuvier Hist. nat. des mammifères III.) < ancient Greek παράδοξος (see paradox n.) + οὐρά tail (see uro- comb. form²), so named on account of the shape of its tail (see below). Compare French paradoxure (1821, in the same source).Earlier in form scientific Latin Paradoxurus, after the scientific Latin genus name:1827 E. Griffith et al. Cuvier's Animal Kingdom V. 159 Golden Paradoxurus. E. Blyth, in E. Blyth et al. Cuvier's Animal Kingdom (1840) 93, suggests that the spiral shape of the tail may have been a deformity peculiar to the exemplar observed by Cuvier.
