Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin paradoxologia; Greek παραδοξολογία.
Etymology: In sense 1 < post-classical Latin paradoxologia love of paradox (a1540) < classical Latin paradoxum paradox n. + -logia -logy comb. form. In sense 2 < ancient Greek παραδοξολογία tale of wonder, marvels < παράδοξον paradox n. + -λογία -logy comb. form. With sense 2 compare earlier paradoxography n., and Hellenistic Greek παραδοξολόγος narrator of marvels. Compare also French paradoxologie treatise on paradoxes (1573 in Middle French in an isolated attestation, subsequently from 1838), comic improvisation (1838), habit of indulging in paradoxes (1842), (in logic) art of using paradoxes (1957 or earlier).
