Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nuntius.
Etymology: < classical Latin nuntius messenger, in post-classical Latin also papal nuncio (from 12th cent. in British sources), member of the Polish diet (16th cent. in Polish sources) < nuntium message, of uncertain origin (see note). Compare nuncius n.It has been suggested that classical Latin nuntium derives from an earlier form noventium, but the latter represents an editorial conjecture.
