Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin hippelaphus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin hippelaphus (1554 or earlier; also scientific Latin hippelaphus (1777)) < ancient Greek ἱππέλαϕος , lit. horse-deer (Aristotle) < ἱππο- hippo- comb. form + ἔλαϕος deer (see elaphine adj.). N.E.D. (1898) gives the pronunciation as (hi·pĭlæf) /ˈhɪpɪlæf/.
Zoology. Obsolete.
A kind of large deer or antelope.Chiefly with reference to the use of the name by Aristotle, who described it as a cloven-footed animal having a thin mane on the neck and withers, a beard-like tuft of hair on the throat, and (in the male) horns resembling those of a gazelle; this has sometimes been identified as the nilgai or the sabar.In quot. 1763, perhaps the elk or reindeer.
