Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἱππιατρικός.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek ἱππιατρικός of or relating to the treatment of diseases of horses (only attested as noun: see hippiatrics n.) < Hellenistic Greek ἱππιατρός veterinary surgeon ( < ancient Greek ἱππο- hippo- comb. form + ἰατρός healer, physician: see iatro- comb. form) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare slightly later hippiatrical adj.In sense A. 2 perhaps after French hippiatrique, hyppiatrique, adjective (although this is apparently first attested slightly later than in English: 1762 or earlier); compare French hippiatrique (noun) art of treating horses (1750).
