Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. A borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: French hippiatrie ; hippo- comb. form, -iatry comb. form.
Etymology: < Middle French, French hippiatrie (1534 in Rabelais) < ancient Greek ἵππος horse (see hippo- comb. form) + Hellenistic Greek -ιατρεία -iatry comb. form. Compare slightly earlier hippiatrics n. In later use perhaps partly re-formed < hippo- comb. form + -iatry comb. form.Compare post-classical Latin hippiatria (1531 or earlier).
