Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin hippiatrica; Greek ἱππιατρικά.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin hippiatrica (plural) treatise on diseases of horses (1577 or earlier; compare earlier hippiatrice , feminine singular (1530 or earlier)), or its etymon (ii) Byzantine Greek ἱππιατρικά (also ἱππιατρικόν, singular), use as noun of neuter of ἱππιατρικός hippiatric adj.: see -ic suffix 2.
Now historical and rare.
The medical treatment of horses. In early use chiefly: †(the title of) a treatise or set of works dealing with this (obsolete). Cf. hippiatry n.
