Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Myoblast.
Etymology: < German Myoblast (C. Claus Lehrbuch der Zoologie (1880) 30) < myo- myo- comb. form + -blast -blast comb. form.
Embryology.
Originally: an embryonic muscle-forming or myoepithelial cell in an invertebrate; (also) †embryonic muscle-forming tissue, mesoderm (obsolete). Later: any incompletely or poorly differentiated muscle cell; esp. any of the mononuclear cells that fuse to form skeletal muscle fibres.
