Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin palmi-.
Etymology: < classical Latin palmi-, combining form (in e.g. palmifer : see palmiferous adj.) of palma palm of the hand, palm tree, etc. (see palm n.1, palm n.2). Compare French palmi- (formations in which are found from at least the first half of the 19th cent.). With sense 2 compare earlier palmati- comb. form, palmato- comb. form.Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin origin. Attested earliest in the early 17th-cent. Latin borrowing palmiped adj. Apart from the apparently isolated palmiferous adj. (mid 17th-cent.), English formations are found from the mid 19th cent.

palmicolous adj. [after scientific Latin palmicola (1814 or earlier); compare French palmicole (1868 in Littré)] Obsolete rare growing on or inhabiting palm trees.
