Origin: A borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French palmique ; palm n.1, -ic suffix.
Etymology: < French palmique (in acide palmique , F. Boudet 1832, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 50 415) < palme palm n.1 + -ique -ic suffix, originally with reference to palma-christi Palma Christi n., the castor oil plant. In sense palmic acid n. (b) at main sense perhaps independently < palm n.1 + -ic suffix, after palmitic adj. Compare slightly earlier palmin n. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pæ·lmik) /ˈpalmɪk/.
Chemistry. Obsolete.
