Etymology: < the name of the Murray River, the main river of a large river-system of south-eastern Australia, explored in 1831 by Charles Sturt (1795–1869) and named by him after the then Colonial Secretary, Sir George Murray (1772–1846).

Any of a series of guidebooks for travellers produced by John Murray, a London publisher, covering Great Britain and Europe, and other parts of the world (more fully Murray's guide, Murray's guidebook). Also: any of a series of British railway timetables published by John Murray (more fully Murray's timetable). Also figurative.The first Murray was published in 1836 and is now regarded as the first modern tourist guide; its publication preceded by a few years the launch of Karl Baedeker's famous rival series. Vividly written and with detailed practical information and advice, Murrays became the most popular guidebooks among British travellers in the 19th cent.
