Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin monostomus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin monostomus (see monostomous adj.); compare -stome comb. form. In the specific noun use after scientific Latin Monostoma, former genus name of a trematode (J. A. E. Goeze (ed. J. H. G. Zeder) Erster Nachtrag zur Naturgeschichte der Eingeweidewürmer (1800) 147). Compare French monostome , adjective (1868 in Littré) and noun (1812 in specific sense). Compare slightly earlier monostomous adj.

Having a single mouth or mouthlike structure; spec. (of a digenean trematode) lacking a ventral sucker and having only an oral sucker.
