Etymology: < augment v. + -ive suffix. Compare augmentative adj. and (with use as noun) earlier augmentative n.Quot. 1483 may alternatively show a transmission error for augmentative adj. Compare also the following earlier example, in an English context, of post-classical Latin (rare) augmentiva (c1301 in a British source; probably a transmission error for augmentativa , feminine of augmentativus augmentative adj.):a1398 J.
