Originally: a state benefit made available to disabled people to assist them in travelling for regular medical attention or other purposes (introduced in 1976 and replaced in 1992 by a component of the Disability Living Allowance). Now, informally: the component of the Disability Living Allowance which relates to a person's mobility.
