单词 miaul
释义

miaulv.

Brit. /mɪˈɔːl/, /mɪˈaʊl/, U.S. /miˈaʊl/
Forms: 1600s meawle, 1600s miol (Scottish), 1700s meaul, 1800s mioul, 1800s– meowl, 1800s– miaul, 1800s– miawl, 1800s– myawl.
Origin: An imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Ultimately imitative; compare meow v. Perhaps < French miauler to miaul (13th cent. in Old French; of imitative origin; given in Cotgrave (1611) in form mioler ), as is perhaps suggested by the context of quot. 1632 at sense 1, although compare also mewl v. beside mew v.1On the form meawle compare note s.v. mew v.1 Eng. Dial. Dict. records also s.v. meowl forms mahl , meahl , mowl (compare note s.v. mew v.1). Miauler (noun) is first recorded glossing French miauleur (first attested as an adjective, 1606; 16th cent. in Middle French in form miolleur). Miauling (noun) and miauling (adjective) are first recorded glossing French miaulement (1564 in Middle French) and miauleux (a1585 in Middle French) respectively.
