Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French obtempérer.
Etymology: < Middle French, French obtempérer to obey, submit to (c1390; 1377 in sense ‘to condescend to’) < classical Latin obtemperāre to be submissive to, to obey, in post-classical Latin also to temper, restrain (beginning of the 14th cent. in H. de Mondeville, the source of quot. ?a1425 at sense 1) < ob- ob- prefix + temperāre temper v. With sense 1 compare temper v.In form obtempter (see quot. ?a1425 at sense 1) probably by confusion with tempt v.
Chiefly Scottish.
