Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin metropoliticus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin metropoliticus (from 12th cent. in British and continental sources) < Byzantine Greek μητροπολιτικός (already in Hellenistic Greek in the sense ‘relating to a citizen of a metropolis’) < μητροπολίτης (see metropolite n.) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare Middle French metropolitique (1362). Compare slightly earlier metropolitical adj.
Obsolete.
