单词 lespedeza
释义

lespedezan.

Brit. /lɛspəˈdiːzə/, U.S. /ˌlɛspəˈdizə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Lespedeza.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Lespedeza (A. Michaux Flora Boreali-Americana (1803) II. 70) < Lespedez , Michaux's apparently erroneous spelling (see note) of the name of Vicente Manuel de Céspedes (d. 1794), governor of the Spanish province of East Florida (now part of the U.S. state of Florida) + -a -a suffix1.The error is reportedly based on a handwritten letter (granting Michaux permission to carry out research in the province), in which Céspedez signed his name with an initial Z, misread as L by Michaux.
Any plant of the leguminous genus Lespedeza, comprising herbs and shrubs native to eastern North America, Asia, and Australia, and bearing clusters of white, pink, or purple flowers. Also (as a mass noun): plants of this genus used in the southern United States to provide fodder or control soil erosion. Also called bush clover, Japan clover.
